Applications being accepted for NWS Virtual Student Volunteers

Program Information

  • Where: National Weather Service – Weather Forecast Office, Grand Rapids, MI
  • What: A limited number of Virtual Student Volunteer positions will be available. Students will need to have good internet service at their summer location. NWS Grand Rapids will set up video communication via Google Meet. Students do not need to have a Google account to join this service. It is expected that students will achieve:
    • A broad knowledge of the NWS mission, operations, and services
    • An understanding of how the NWS virtually performs key functions
    • An ability to use forecasting tools to diagnose the weather
    • A graphical approach to conveying forecasts, including probabilistic information
    • A greater comprehension of how NWS partners use our forecast information
    • A better awareness of career options in meteorology

When: This 12-week virtual program runs June 1 - August 20. Each student will participate in short, once per week video sessions with an NWS staff member. At this time we are not expecting in-person training to be available.

Eligibility

  • Students must be enrolled at a college or university at least half time during the entire internship period
  • Those in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs are welcome to apply
  • Students who are graduating in Spring 2021 and are not enrolled in a program in Fall 2021 are not eligible
  • Students who have taken synoptic and dynamic meteorology courses are preferred
  • Applicants who have not taken synoptic/dynamic or are pursuing a degree in a closely related science (ie. Environmental Science, Climatology, Hydrology, etc.) are still welcome to apply

Required Application Materials

  • Cover letter (one page) demonstrating your interest in becoming a volunteer
  • Resumé that includes the following: your academic standing, anticipated major/minor or advanced degree, noteworthy academic achievements, extracurricular or personal accomplishments, advisor’s name and contact information, recent employment experience including core responsibilities and whether we can contact your supervisor(s)
  • Unofficial transcripts

  • Applications must be received by 11:59 PM EST, March 4, 2021
