National Weather Service of State College – Penn State University Joint Internship

Summary: The Penn State Office of Emergency Management (PSUOEM) and The National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in State College are now interviewing for internship positions in emergency management meteorology. The student chosen for this position will work as an interagency liaison to lead campus weather preparedness initiatives while preparing and delivering critical weather briefings to university public safety staff.

The internship, which began the summer of 2013, allows the student to work between the State College National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Innovation Park and the Office of Emergency Management on the Penn State Campus.   • Learn advanced forecasting techniques

  • Deliver decision support as needed for weather-sensitive operations at Penn State

  • Brief public safety staff on hazardous weather conditions

  • Create and implement campus weather preparedness projects and programs

  • Visibly improve campus safety as a campus and community leader


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior studying meteorology

  • Experience in producing short (days 1-3) and medium (days 4-7) range forecasts

  • Ability to nowcast using radar and local observations

  • Background in emergency response and/or risk management

  • Strong motivation, leadership, and creativity in problem solving

Location: State College, Pennsylvania

Compensation: Three credits through METEO 495A
