The Illinois State Water Survey is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Scientist, Climatology to develop a highly-visible outreach and research program to provide climate information to Illinois decision-makers, businesses, professional groups and the public. Work with the Section Head, the State Climatologist Office, Midwestern Regional Climate Center to enrich climate outreach and research activities within the Climate and Atmospheric Science Section. The person selected for this position will become the State Climatologist.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Educate Illinois decision-makers, businesses, professional groups and the public utilizing survey climate research data and analyses.
  • Give presentations on climate-related topics to appropriate groups.
  • Work with the Section Head, the State Climatologist Office, Midwestern Regional Climate Center, and other staff to enrich climate outreach activities within the Climate and Atmospheric Science Section.
  • Provide guidance on, and conduct, cutting-edge research in climate and climate outreach, with scientists in the Section, Illinois State Water Survey, Prairie Research Institute and the University of Illinois.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the fields of climate and climate outreach.
  • Interact with Federal and State funding sources and be able to develop research and development activities that meet their foci and needs.
  • Work closely with the Section Head and staff members to find opportunities for applied climate activities.
  • Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of the Section, ISWS, PRI, and the University of Illinois 

Required Qualifications:

Education:  PhD in a field strongly impacted by climate, such as in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, etc. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.
