JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (University Park, PA), is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor focusing on online education. The department is a recognized leader in meteorological education throughout the world, and has a current online course portfolio that includes an Undergraduate Certificate in Weather Forecasting, a Graduate Certificate in Weather and Climate Analytics, and several additional general education meteorology courses and courses developed for other online programs. Students enrolled in these online programs come from a wide array of backgrounds, cultures, and prerequisite knowledge levels, and range from traditional in-residence learners to adult professionals enrolled through Penn State’s World Campus.

Primary duties will include teaching online courses in both the undergraduate and graduate online programs, offering informal advising to students in these programs, and assisting in designing, revising, and updating online course content and assessment. The successful applicant must be committed to high-quality online teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; be able to respond to student needs effectively in a timely fashion; have excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills; and work effectively in a collaborative, team-based environment as well as independently. A thorough knowledge of basic meteorological principles as well as experience in working with weather and climate datasets, statistical analysis, and computer programming is required.

Educational requirements include either a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field, although candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science, and an advanced degree in applied statistics, data analytics, or related field will also be considered. Familiarity with the “R” open-source statistical software is a plus. Prior teaching experience is preferred, but not required. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with very good possibility for renewal in subsequent years.
