Job description

The main objective of the Meteorology Support Analyst is to build high-quality weather forecasts and decision-support products tailored to the outstanding needs of operational personnel and locations within and outside of the Network Operations Center (NOC), including airports and other partner organizations. The entry-level Analyst will contribute to a key pivotal initiative to craft and deploy an enterprise-wide weather forecast services function supporting frontline stakeholders across multiple operational groups.

  • Build continuously updating, curated weather forecast workflows for critical hazards across the entire United network
  • Collaborate with Digital Technology development teams to integrate weather data and forecast products into operational decision-support tools and projects
  • Improve forecast quality via calibration with a combination of historical weather data and United operational data to build automated workflows for weather-focused operations management and business continuity
  • Conduct queries, analysis, and visualization of current and past forecast data for qualitative and quantitative verification

Qualifications

What is needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or similar, or equivalent years of experience
  • 1-year experience with object-oriented programming for meteorology or aviation applications (internship and college experience included)
  • Knowledge of operational meteorology
  • Familiarity with meteorological data types and formats
  • Knowledge of web or dashboard design principles
  • Confirmed understanding of domestic and international geography
  • Proven understanding of at least one object-oriented programming language, with Python strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in one or multiple of the following: frontend development, data visualization, and/or SQL
  • Ability to handle sophisticated technical tasks with minimal direction
  • Creative and flexible when solving problems
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is a crucial function of the position

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 1+ years of operational forecasting or aviation meteorology experience
  • Proven interest or experience in aviation meteorology
  • Solid understanding of Python's Plotly, Folium, and/or Mapbox
  • Experience with frontend development including website or dashboard design
  • Experience working with the PyData stack (Pandas, Numpy, SciPy, xarray, and similar)
  • Ability to develop code with GitHub and/or AWS
  • Experience with Python Machine Learning frameworks including TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
