Atmospheric Scientist

(Fairfax, VA; US Citizenship)

Join a dedicated team of scientists and software developers responsible for developing, integrating, and maintaining an atmospheric model for simulating the release of materials to the atmosphere and their associated dispersion using weather forecasts. Be the scientist who is responsible for investigating failures when running the atmospheric model, implementing new capabilities, and integrating physics models developed by other scientists as part of a multi-company team collaboration. Become a key team member for developing and implementing changes to a complex software product for a Department of Defense (DoD) agency. Work side by side with scientists and software engineers who are experts in their field, at an office park in a residential neighborhood within the Washington DC metropolitan area. The work is fast-paced, provides excitement, challenges, and opportunities to learn in many disciplines.

This is a full-time position with opportunity to transition to other software integration projects. The selected individual will work as an integral member of a team, and will be responsible for writing object-oriented Java and C++ code as part of a collaborative effort.

Basic Requirements

  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance
  • S. degree or higher in meteorology, atmospheric science, physics, mathematics, or related field
  • Experience in developing, modifying, and using atmospheric models
  • One (1) or more years of work experience in using the Java and C++ object-oriented programming language
  • Demonstrated strong ability to work independently in a self-directed environment
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Requirements

  • Active Secret clearance desired but not required
  • D. degree or higher in meteorology, atmospheric science, physics, mathematics, or related field
  • Experience developing and implementing physics algorithms in atmospheric models
  • Knowledge of atmospheric turbulence is a plus
  • Experience in MATLAB desired but not required
  • Experience in machine learning tools applied to meteorology data sets
  • Experience in Python, Ruby, JavaScript desired but not required
  • Experience in developing software in FORTRAN is a plus
