Job description

Chief Research Scientist

The chief research scientist provides strategic leadership and technical expertise in the innovative advancement and development of environmental systems for the support of US government and commercial organizations. As a direct report to the COMPANY CEO, this includes the design, development and test of airborne atmospheric sensors for manned and unmanned aircraft and the exploitation of this sensor data for human and autonomous aviation and ground operations. The chief research scientist further combines his or her experience, knowledge and modeling expertise to develop and implement best practices and novel methods to improve the resolution, latency and fidelity of weather models to deliver environmental knowledge decision products for COMPANY customers to meet mission needs or customer goals. He or she also collaborates also with internal and external partners to ensure that technology decisions and recommendations align with COMPANY and client requirements.


  • Directly advise the CEO on all technical matters related to the discipline of atmospheric physics,
    models and science.
  • Guide, direct and conduct the scientific and technical analysis of large environmental datasets for
    innovative use.
  • Algorithm development to exploit atmospheric and physical processes data for the generation of
    environmental decision products.
  • Direct the Verification and Validation (V&V) of future and existing technological environmental
  • Implement best practices; assessing new technologies, participating in government-privatecommercial
    technical exchanges to include risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Conduct literature reviews and surveys on emerging topics of interest.
  • Advise COMPANY on recommended Courses of Action (COAs) relative to development efforts.
  • Provide atmospheric science expertise at various trade shows, conventions and business meetings.
  • Provide atmospheric science and technical writing expertise.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in a relevant atmospheric or hydrography physical process discipline; or
  • Master’s degree in the same with 15 years’ experience.
  • Holds or is willing to apply for a Secret clearance (minimum).
  • Field experience (10 years minimum) in the understanding of the weather models.
  • Background in aviation weather modeling or forecasting.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with MATLAB or other scientific data analysis tools
  • 3-5 years’ experience with scripting languages such as Python and/or ArcGIS
