Meteorological Scientist for The Weather Company

Your Role and Responsibilities
The Weather Company, an IBM Business is seeking a scientist to join our team in either Andover, MA or Atlanta, GA. You will be part of the Forecast Research and Development group that develops, evaluates, refines, and reduces to practice cutting-edge technologies that drive accurate weather forecasts consumed by billions of people and businesses worldwide. Using the core meteorological sciences, and technical skills such as machine learning and software engineering, you will contribute to furthering a broad set of state-of-the-art weather forecasting capabilities.

The specific job duties include:

  • Research, develop, prototype, and evaluate pragmatic methods for advancing real-time weather prediction accuracy and its application such as probabilistic forecasting, NWP models and their outputs, and the impacts of weather on society and businesses.
  • Assemble, manipulate and analyze relevant meteorological data including numerical weather prediction model forecasts, multi-model ensembles and a broad range of meteorological observations.
  • Develop and/or use meteorological and data sciences and software engineering methods to create new innovative approaches to forecasting challenges.
  • Work effectively in an agile team environment with other scientists and software engineers to envision, architect, implement and evaluate new capabilities.
  • Sustain and advance knowledge in meteorology and other relevant technical disciplines such as data science and software development.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • A Master’s degree in the atmospheric sciences, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • A visceral interest in the development and reduction to practice of pragmatic capabilities for advancing the accuracy and applicability of weather forecasts.
  • Mastery in development of meteorological software using one or more languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or NCL in a Linux environment.
  • Deep experience in working with a variety of real-time meteorological data sets.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, machine learning, data mining, and related techniques to meteorological problems.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
