Job Description:

The Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) is the nation's sixth sense for decisive knowledge. Our mission is to provide national authorities quality technical measurements to monitor nuclear treaty compliance and develop advanced proliferation monitoring technologies to preserve our nation's security. We are the sole organization in the federal government whose mission is to detect and report technical data from foreign nuclear explosions.

  • Leverage your atmospheric science expertise to help a national security mission that monitor’s worldwide nuclear treaty compliance and any "nuclear surprises" from rogue nations
  • Produce analyses and briefings that routinely get presented to the highest levels of government (e.g., the Secretary of Defense and the President of the United States)
  • Evaluate and analyze nuclear tests and accidents to better understand relevant atmospheric processes and to improve current tools and capabilities
  • Represent AFTAC at national and international meetings concerning nuclear treaty monitoring
  • Conduct independent research and development in data assimilation, atmospheric transport and dispersion applications, Bayesian source inversion, machine learning, and many other topics to enhance and limit the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
  • Collaborate with nationally and internationally recognized scientists in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Serve as a national-level expert for contracted work with major universities, national laboratories, and agencies
  • Work in one of the most advanced and well respected meteorological groups in the United States government

The positions are located at AFTAC headquarters in sunny Central Florida. We are approximately 60 miles east of Orlando near Cocoa Beach, the Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral. We are seeking several qualified candidates to provide senior technical expertise in the areas of mesoscale modeling/data assimilation, transport and dispersion modeling, and meteorological data analysis. Our global mission requires accurate meteorological modeling across many scales anywhere in the world. In these positions, you will:


  • U.S. Citizenship is required
  • Bachelor's degree in meteorology or related field required, Master's or PhD is highly desired.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information
  • This is a drug testing position. Will be subject to pre-employment and random drug screens
  • May be required to undergo random CI polygraph examinations in accordance with security regulations involving material handled
  • Must have mastered the concepts and principles in the field of atmospheric science. Your knowledge must be both broad and in depth
  • Must have the expertise in regional/mesoscale modeling and atmospheric transport and diffusion is required
  • Must have extensive experience using these models on HPC systems
  • Must have extensive knowledge of advanced meteorological data assimilation
  • Must be able to maintain effective working relationships and interact directly with scientists from varied disciplines (e.g., nuclear engineering, chemistry, and statistics)
  • Must have experience in community accepted best practices for atmospheric forecasting of gases and other effluents
  • May be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments
  • May be required to work irregular duty hours, nights, or weekends
  • New employees are required to serve a two-year probationary period
