Job description

CFD Research is seeking a Meteorology Software Developer with a background in Computer Science, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Physics, or related disciplines to join our Weather Applications Team to provide software development expertise for meteorological applications. CFD Research's Weather Application team is a blended team of scientists and engineers developing cutting-edge weather-specific technologies and software solutions to aid customers, the public, and our employees in their weather-based decision making for more weather-ready and resilient communities. The Weather Applications Team builds software applications for defense weather interests to support the warfighter, web-based solutions for NOAA's mission to protect life and property, and supports integration of weather intelligence into commercial needs, while maintaining data integrity and stewardship.

The candidate's key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Use technical and scientific meteorological domain knowledge to design and develop innovative algorithms and software applications for atmospheric impact-based solutions
  • Develop software applications using languages and tools such as Python, Django, C++, and GIS.
  • Integrating weather applications with engineering software
  • Technical communication - reports, presentations for customers and across a diverse team
  • Lead software design and development tasks
  • Mentoring and teaching team members

The ideal candidate provides independent thinking and initiative to troubleshoot challenges of CFD Research customers and stakeholders. The candidate leverages their experiences in software engineering, atmospheric research, and meteorological applications to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-disciplinary environment to integrate scientific knowledge and solve complex problems. The ideal candidate can balance multiple projects, is customer-focused with a passion to find creative solutions to fit a customer's needs, and has a willingness to learn and grow. The candidate can explore additional areas of interest to develop their own ideas for grant applications or to develop new products.

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and meet eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a clearance
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Atmospheric Science, Physics, or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Candidate should have least 3 years of software development experience
  • Demonstrates fluency in Python or C++
  • Use of programming version control such as Git
  • Curious learner and self-driven with excellent and creative problem-solving skills
  • Experience with HDF5, NetCDF, GRIB, and JSON data formats
  • Highly proficient with the Linux operating system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud-based platforms such as AWS and/or Azure
  • Experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning
  • Experience with satellite, weather radar, and remote sensing datasets
  • Experience in front-end application design
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Django, Docker, GIS, HTML/CSS, Javascript, Java, ReactJS
  • Experience working with Defense applications from either civilian or military background
