Job description

Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Machine Learning Arctic air-sea Fluxes Group in the Physical Oceanographic Department.  This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with possible second year continuation contingent on progress and funding.

Postdoctoral position in Machine Learning and Arctic air-sea Fluxes at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Essential Functions

We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent scientist for a postdoctoral investigator position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The postdoctoral position is part of a NOAA sponsored new initiative dedicated to developing machine learning models for Arctic air-sea fluxes. The research will focus on using measurements from autonomous saildrones and moored stations to train machine learning algorithms for improved retrieval of the marine boundary structure from satellite remote sensing. The research team also includes members from the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL), Earth System Research Lab (ESRL), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The successful postdoctoral investigator will have the opportunity to work with data and climate models to study surface energy budgets and air-sea-ice feedbacks in a thawing Arctic.

The institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the postdoctoral investigator will have an opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project.

Online application forms should be submitted with a complete curriculum vitae, cover letter, brief statement of research interests and career goals, up to three relevant publications, and names and contact information for at least three references.

Position is available immediately. Preference will be given to applications received by June 15, 2021 but applicants will be considered until the position is filled.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • PhD. (or anticipated within 3 months) in oceanography, meteorology, computer sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Computer and programming skills including Fortran, MatLab, Unix Shell, and Python
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write high-level scientific reports and publications and meet project milestones
  • Work well with a group.
