Job description

Postdoctoral Position: Assessment of Satellite Observations and Global Data Assimilation 

The Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at the University of Maryland (UMD) invites applicants for postdoctoral positions in the areas of satellite observation assessment and data assimilation for global numerical weather prediction through the systematic applications of artificial intelligence, observing system experiments as well as observing system simulation experiments.  Successful candidates will work closely with scientists at NOAA Center for Satellite Application & Research (STAR) to assess value and impact of the satellite instruments. Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidates, employment at different level may be possible. The positions are for 12 months with possibility of extension; starting salary is commensurate with experience. 

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or closely related disciplines. 

Preferred Qualifications: Primary: Expertise in numerical weather prediction, satellite observations, and data assimilation. Secondary: Experience with the NOAA operational global data assimilation system and parallel (MPI) programming.
