Postdoctoral position on the UTLS aerosol, cloud and precipitation interactions at ESCER Centre (Université du Québec à Montréal, Montréal, Canada)

A postdoctoral researcher is sought to collaborate with Maud Leriche and Jean-Pierre Blanchet (UQÀM) and Yi Huang (McGill University) on a research project to study the vertical exchange of aerosols and water vapour in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) region linked to deep convective clouds in the tropics to mid-latitudes or to thin ice clouds at high-latitudes (Arctic). Interactions between aerosols and clouds are one of the leading climate change uncertainties and a deep challenge for atmospheric model simulations. As past studies mainly focussed on the lower tropospheric region, very few
studies have paid attention to the UTLS region. In such environment, with low aerosol particles and water vapour and cold temperatures, the coupling between the ice nuclei, the cloud formation and the precipitation initiation is critical for the radiation balance from convective to large scales. Moreover, injection of aerosol particles and water vapour in the UTLS affects the cloud radiative forcing leading to further dynamic exchange. In such complex situation, mesoscale atmospheric models coupling chemistry, aerosols and cloud microphysics are powerful tools by allowing representing each process and their coupling. Numerical results from these kinds of models can be directly compared to in-situ or satellite observations.

This project will be conducted in the framework of the future NASA satellite mission on aerosols, clouds, convection and precipitation (ACCP) for which three Canadian instruments are being developed: (i) TICFIRE (Thin Ice Clouds in Far IR Emissions, radiometer in far IR, nadir viewing), which provides measurements of water vapour and thin ice clouds (TIC) from the surface up to UTLS, (ii) ALI (Aerosol Limb Imager, limb viewing), which provides measurements of aerosols and discriminates between aerosols and TIC, (iii) SHOW (Spatial Heterodyne Observation of Water, limb viewing), which provides
enhanced sampling and improved accuracy in water vapour in UTLS. Scenes generated by the model will then serve as a benchmark for testing ACCP instruments synergies through the OSSE (observing system simulation experiments) approach.

Duties:
The aim of the study will be to determine which processes are responsible for injection of aerosol particles and water vapour in the UTLS linked to deep convection or TIC and to investigate the possible feedbacks. This work will be based upon Meso-NH high-resolution simulations of several case studies. These case studies will be determined based on past campaigns and satellite observations from CALIPSO and OMPS-LP. Finally, the analysis of Meso-NH high-resolution simulations including chemistry, aerosols, cloud microphysics and radiation will allow assessing the impact of vertical mixing on the aerosol and cloud properties in the UTLS.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in atmospheric science, chemistry physics or related scientific discipline,
  • Background in atmospheric chemistry,
  • Experience in development and application of atmospheric models on the process and/or regional scale; knowledge of Fortran or other common programming language, 
  • Experience in atmospheric aerosols and/or cloud modeling would be an advantage, 
  • Good command of both written and spoken English.

Minimum annual compensation: 55,000 CAD
The initial term of appointment is for 12 months with the possibility of renewal for another 12 months with salary evolution based on satisfactory performance. The position should start on June 1, 2021.
