Job description
The Quantitative Ecosystem Dynamics Lab at UC Berkeley (http://www.keenangroup.info/) invites creative and independent applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher position. See here for more information, including how to apply.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to various ongoing projects in the group (current projects) and will collaborate closely with external collaborators both in academia and industry. We are particularly interested in the role of vegetation in the global carbon cycle, water constraints, land surface modeling, and natural climate solutions. Other specific areas of interest include long-term ecosystem dynamics, the development and application of ecophysiological theory, ecohydrology, machine learning and remote sensing applications, land surface model emulation, and leveraging the information contained in eddy-covariance observations. Carbon, water and energy dynamics are central to our work. The ideal candidate would have familiarity with ecosystem carbon dynamics and water use, land surface modeling and/or remote sensing.
Candidates with strong quantitative skills and an interest in developing skills in any of the above areas are very much encouraged to apply. Please include a brief (< 1pg) description of your interests and what you would like to work on if you joined the group.
Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis, with priority given to applications received before November 26th.
Candidates from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged. We welcome applications from current postdocs or PhD students within 6 months of completing their PhD. The position start date is flexible.
Specific duties of the position include:
• The application of quantitative analytical methods to large datasets
• Critical appraisal of ecological and physiological theory, in particular in relation to photosynthesis
• The use and development of remote sensing data and techniques
• Model development and implementation
• Presentation of results at scientific meetings
• Publishing of results in scientific journals
• Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
Required qualifications:
• PhD expected within roughly 6 months of application date.
• Must have 3 years or less of postdoctoral experience
Preferred qualifications:
• Proficient coding skills in at least one of: R, Matlab, Python, Fortran
• Knowledge of ecophysiology and plant biochemistry
• Both numerical and communication skills
• Evidence of ability to publish results in high-quality journals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
Bones qualifications:
- Experience using CLM, CLM-FATES, LPJ-GUESS or similar
- Strong interest in reforestation and/or conservation
- Interest in living in the Bay Area
