Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO; formerly CIMMS) at the University of Oklahoma is seeking a Radar Applications Developer to work as a member of the Doppler Radar and Remote Sensing Research (DRARSR) team at the NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). The DRARSR team conducts applied weather radar research and develops tools for the NEXRAD radar network that are made available to National Weather Service forecasters. In this role, you will work collaboratively with DRARSR team members and partners to develop and transition these scientific applications and algorithms from research into operations. Additionally, phased array radar is currently being explored as a potential next-generation weather radar technology for NOAA. You will work alongside scientists at NSSL and within DRARSR to evaluate the data quality and rapid- and adaptive-scanning benefits of phased array radar using the Advanced Technology Demonstrator, an experimental dual-polarization phased array radar. This position is based in Norman, Oklahoma at the National Weather Center (https://www.ou.edu/nwc), a highly collaborative operational, research, and academic environment with over 500 scientists, engineers, faculty, and students.

Who we are:

CIWRO is the largest research center at the University of Oklahoma, comprising over 200 scientists, staff, and students. CIWRO is one of fifteen NOAA Cooperative Institutes, with a mission of promoting collaborative research among university and NOAA scientists in order to further the understanding of mutual issues and produce better warnings and forecasts to save property and lives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead research-to-operations efforts by transitioning and delivering operational prototypes of weather radar algorithms
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on proposed radar-based algorithms to scientists and algorithm developers
  • Process data as requested by scientists and algorithm developers
  • Serve as a resource regarding radar-related applied research, software development and coding standards, and the use of novel software products.
  • Deliver presentations on research progress and accomplishments to stakeholders and at professional conferences, and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals

Required qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least three (3) years of full-time related experience, or a Master’s Degree, in meteorology, computer science, software engineering, mathematics, or a related area
  • Ability to work in the Linux operating system and independently program in C or C++, Perl, and/or Python (code sample and test required)
  • Experience working with weather radar data or other geospatial datasets
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others

Preferred qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with Linux, C, C++, Perl, and Python
  • Understanding of dual-polarization Doppler weather radar data processing, quality, and meteorological signatures
  • Excellent presentation, technical writing, and reporting skills and habits

Supervision will be provided by CIWRO staff. Technical oversight will be provided by CIWRO staff and NSSL Federal staff. This is a non-supervisory position although the incumbent may serve as a leader of technical teams. The beginning salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications with University of Oklahoma benefits. Information on benefits may be found at http://hr.ou.edu/Employees
