Research Position in Remote Sensing

The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies – Maryland (CICESS-MD) at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD (UMD) seeks to fill an earth science researcher position investigating data and measurement methodologies from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflectometry, i.e., GNSS-R. This research effort reflects UMD’s and NOAA's effort to establish the scientific foundation of the next-generation observation architecture, as well as to work on exploring new technologies with the potential for inclusion in NOAA’s future observing systems portfolio.  The successful applicant will work closely with the scientists and engineers at CICESS-MD, NOAA’s Center for Satellite Application & Research (STAR), NASA CYGNSS science team, and partners at academia, industry, and NASA centers.

The scientist will conduct research to exploit land applications from the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) for the identification of standing surface water and the monitoring of soil moisture changes. The researcher should have strong communication skills to communicate research results in oral and written reports and peer review papers, and to support the use of CYGNSS land measurements for improving NOAA’s hydrological prediction modeling and situational awareness.  


Qualifications: Applicants should have a doctoral or master degree in atmospheric sciences, electrical engineering, or other related science and engineering disciplines. Preferences will be given to candidates have previous experiences working with GNSS-R or CYGNSS data. The successful candidate should be technically capable, self-motivated, collaborative, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. 

Timeframe: This is a one-year position at the University of Maryland, College Park that is extendable for additional years based on candidate performance and continuation of funding.
