Job description

There is as an immediate opening for an aviation meteorologist to join Delta Air Lines Meteorology Department in Atlanta, Georgia.   Major duties include:  

  • Analyzing computer models, radar, satellite, lightning, PIREPs, METARs and other text or graphical weather products in order to produce accurate and timely forecast products. 
  • Producing surface products to communicate risk of weather impacts at Delta airports and other locations.  This includes: 
    • Preparing and monitoring TAFs 
    • Monitoring for large scale weather events, like winter storms or hurricanes, and producing detailed forecasts for duration of these events 
    • Answering variety of weather-related questions throughout the shift 
  • Producing safety-related, upper air products for a variety of upper air hazards across the globe.  This includes: 
    • Forecasting and monitoring for turbulence, thunderstorms, volcanic ash, icing, ozone and space weather 
    • Analyzing complex horizontal & vertical atmospheric conditions that are changing in time, then summarizing into concise forecast products 
    • Continuously monitoring real-time weather conditions and updating forecast products 
  • Providing scheduled and unscheduled briefings to a variety of customers including dispatchers, operations personnel, and pilots, as well as other individuals responsible for the safety and efficiency of the operation.   Verbal and written briefings occur multiple times per day. 
  • Coordinating and collaborating with co-workers and other operations personnel throughout the shift to ensure the consistency, accuracy and quality expected of all Delta Meteorologists.  

All applicants must be willing to support 24x7 department by working rotating shifts (early morning, afternoon/evenings and midnight shifts), most weekends, holidays and have rotating days off.  Overtime will be required at times.     

To be successful, the candidate must be both customer oriented and able to maintain situational awareness, concentration and focus under time constraints and environmental pressure.  He or she must be able to quickly respond to weather related operational requests and be able to identify, prioritize and communicate information regarding weather or atmospheric conditions that affect the safety and/or efficiency of airline operations.  Must practice safety conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data.
  • Embraces a diverse set of people, thinking and styles.
  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency.
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States.
  • A B.S. degree or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or related discipline, or equivalent military training is required.  
  • This position requires proficiency in Windows applications and general PC knowledge, along with excellent oral and written skills.   

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • We prefer a minimum of two years’ experience in aviation forecasting, but we are willing to train depending upon other qualifications.
