The Opportunity

The Software Developer, Infrastructure (Meteorological Systems) is responsible for developing and maintaining systems that ingest, process and aggregate meteorological data at mass volumes. The systems must have high availability, fast response times and scalability to support 4 billion global locations.

In this position, the successful candidate works with other technology and business units to define and implement functional specifications for meteorological-related applications; to maintain various applications as part of an iterative, agile development process; to write clean code and demonstrate expertise in working with complicated algorithms. They will work closely with our Meteorology R&D team to bring in new and innovative solutions for weather forecasting.

The developer will participate in requirements analysis and help design, implement, integrate, test, document and deploy backend meteorological systems and processes. The developer will also provide professional technical support for new and existing applications, will be well-versed in SDLC and building robust, high-performance systems. Additionally, they will contribute to the evolution of the systems, which will create new requirements and pose new challenges for handling high volumes of data.

What’s the Day to Day Look Like:

  • Conceptualize, design, document, develop and implement high quality, high availability, high scalability, high performance Java/C#/C/C++/Server Scripting based software solutions pertaining to Meteorological systems as per project road map and requests initiated by business units or the Technology departments.
  • Work within an Agile software development process.
  • Build products to run through a CI/CD pipeline.
  • Work with Technology teams to produce effort estimates on the various work required; execute work based on sprint priorities.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure all systems function as intended and without impediment to existing products or processes. This includes the development and/or integration of monitoring systems.
  • Work with Technology Operations team to ensure end-to-end data monitoring in software design, from data acquisition to delivery.
  • Use knowledge of databases and database technology to create applications which are distributed, multi-tier, and able to service large volumes of data.
  • Knowledge of caching methodologies to facilitate high demand of data.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, and other automated testing; work closely with QA team to address defects as they arise to ensure production of high quality software.
  • Architect designs for reuse, scalability, flexibility and customizability.
  • Work with Technology teams to continuously analyze in-house software systems, identify weaknesses and propose changes for improvement.
  • Provide support to our operational teams for the relevant production systems.

What we’ll expect from YOU

  • University degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a field of physical science.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in enterprise software development.
  • Strong experience developing production applications in C/C++, Java or C#.
  • Strong experience developing production applications within a Linux, Windows, and UNIX environments.
  • Strong scripting experience in one the following: Python, Perl, Bash, Javascript.
  • Strong XML experience in the following areas: XSD Schemas, XSLT Transformations.
  • Experience with spatiotemporal data sets and scientific data formats including netCDF, HDF, GRIB and BUFR.
  • Experience in developing software for manipulating large amounts of data.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices.
  • Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD).
  • Experience building and consuming web services utilizing REST and SOAP protocols.
  • Experience with Relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with multi-tier and distributed systems architecture.
  • Experience in building high availability and high scalability systems servicing large volumes of data.
  • Experience with Cloud Platforms including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
  • Education or experience in atmospheric science an asset.
  • Education or experience in applying ML/AI to augment data analysis an asset.
