The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a mission-critical position focused on online teaching at the graduate level. This is a full-time academic appointment (non-tenure track) at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor (title commensurate with experience and qualifications), but with opportunities for summer salary through additional online course instruction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will help develop and then maintain online courses at the graduate level in the area of Weather and Climate Risk and Prediction; these courses will form the core of an online M.S. program being developed by the department. The typical course load is four online courses per academic year in this area; s/he will also have the option to teach one to two additional courses during the summer, with a salary supplement. S/he will be expected to contribute to continued development and improvement of the online M.S. program, and also mentor students in this program. Finally, as a teaching professor, s/he will be expected to conduct disciplinary and/or pedagogical research.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, or a closely related field, is required.
  • The appointment requires experience in college- or university-level teaching. Also required is experience working with numerical models and/or data analysis, and proficiency in computer programming.
  • Proficiency in Python, experience using github or version control and cloud/cluster computing, and experience using and editing video media, will enhance an application. Experience in online teaching and online course development, and experience working with and mentoring students, will also enhance an application.
  • The successful applicant will possess the ability to work collaboratively with faculty in developing online materials, and the ability to work with a multi-media team in video production.
