Penn State Meteorology faculty garner top awards from the American Meteorological Society
Please join us in congratulating two Penn State Meteorology faculty who have been recognized as leaders in their field by The American Meteorological Society. We're deeply honored that John C. Wyngaard and Anne M. Thompson have been selected to receive these highly coveted awards by the AMS. The awards will be presented during a special banquet held during the 92nd Annual American Meteorological Society Meeting in New Orleans, LA from January 22-26, 2012.

THE CARL-GUSTAF ROSSBY RESEARCH MEDAL
professor of meteorology emeritus
For outstanding contributions to measuring, simulating, and understanding atmospheric turbulence.
The Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal is presented to individuals on the basis of outstanding contributions to the understanding of the structure or behavior of the atmosphere. It represents the highest honor that the Society can bestow upon an atmospheric scientist. The award is in the form of a medallion.

THE VERNER E. SUOMI AWARD
Anne M. Thompson
professor of meteorology
For exceptional vision and leadership in deploying technologies that have significantly advanced the understanding of ozone dynamics in the atmosphere.
The Verner E. Suomi Award is granted to individuals in recognition of highly significant technological achievement in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. The term "technological" is here used in the broadest sense; it encompasses the entire spectrum of observational, measurement, data transmission, and data analysis and synthesis methodologies. The award is in the form of a medallion.
Several other Penn State Meteorology affiliates and alumni were also included among this year's award winners.
