Job description

About the Position

CISESS/UMD seeks an experienced Atmospheric Scientist to join our Radio Occultation research and development team. The successful candidate will focus on 1D variational (1D var) inversion using data from Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS RO), Microwave sounders, Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and infrared sounders to employ Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MiRS) as a part of multisensor data fusion strategy. This approach aims to enhance the accuracy and completeness of atmospheric retrievals from surface to high altitude. This role is pivotal in advancing our understanding of atmospheric phenomena through innovative data analysis and scientific studies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of 1D var inversion algorithms using combined satellite data.
  • Analyze atmospheric data from GNSS RO, MiRS, MLS, and infrared satellites.
  • Conduct scientific studies to enhance understanding of atmospheric processes and climate change.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate satellite data for comprehensive atmospheric modeling.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Present research at national and international conferences.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students and junior researchers in related projects.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Remote Sensing, or a closely related field.
  • Proven expertise in 1D var inversion techniques and atmospheric data analysis.
  • Experience handling and interpreting data from GNSS RO, MiRS, MLS, and infrared satellite sources.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C/C++, IDL, MATLAB, Python, or similar) is required.
  • Strong publication record in the field of atmospheric science or remote sensing.
  • Excellent communication skills for scientific writing and presenting research findings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral or equivalent experience in a relevant research area.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a research project.
  • Knowledge of current trends and advancements in atmospheric science and remote sensing.

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with at least three professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to xshao@umd.edu.
